Boosting Herd Health and Labor Efficiency: Trevor Nutcher’s Experience with AHV
Gustine, California – On a fourth-generation dairy farm nestled in the heart of California’s Central Valley, Trevor Nutcher and his father are redefining herd health and operational efficiency. Milking around 2,000 Holstein cows and shipping to Hilmar Cheese, the Nutcher family has always prioritized animal welfare, comfort, and productivity. But a recent shift in their approach to herd health—thanks to AHV—has brought transformative results.
A Legacy of Care and Innovation
“We’ve always focused on cow comfort and health,” says Trevor. “The better cared for the cow is, the better she’ll produce.” From investing in fans to reduce heat stress to remodeling barns for better airflow, every decision is made with the herd’s well-being in mind.
But even with these efforts, udder and fresh cow challenges remained a concern—until AHV entered the picture.

Discovering AHV: A New Approach to Udder Health
A few years ago, a visit from an AHV representative introduced Trevor to a new way of thinking about udder health. “The concept of quorum sensing and how AHV products help the cow’s immune system break down biofilm—it was fascinating,” he recalls.
In March of the following year, the Nutcher farm began a trial with AHV’s udder solutions. “We were using traditional intramammary antibiotics with okay results,” Trevor explains. “But when we factored in hospital days, milk loss, and recurrence rates, AHV came out nearly identical in cost per case—but with far better outcomes.”
Real Results: Fewer Hospital Days, Lower Costs
Since switching to AHV, the hospital pen has shrunk dramatically. “We’ve gone from 20+ cows in the pen to sometimes none at all,” Trevor says. “That’s never happened before.”
On average, cows treated with AHV spend just 2.5 days in the hospital pen—compared to 7 days with traditional tubes. “That’s a huge savings in milk and labor,” he adds. “And we’re not worried about cows slipping into the tank or separating milkers anymore.”
Fresh Cow Protocols and Reproductive Health
The Nutcher farm also uses AHV Metri products for fresh cows on a case-by-case basis. “If a cow has retained placenta, we treat her with Metri. Most of the time, that’s all it takes,” Trevor notes. “We’re saving $20–30 per cow with this approach.”
Reducing Antibiotic Use and Resistance
One of the biggest benefits? A significant reduction in antibiotic use. “We haven’t used a mastitis tube since switching to AHV,” Trevor says. “The only time a cow sees antibiotics is during dry-off. That lowers the risk of resistance and contamination.”
Easy to Use, Effective, and Efficient
Administering AHV products is simple. “The pills go into a refillable tuber—easy to use, even for curb-lickers,” Trevor laughs. “Mild cases often clear up with just an extra pill. Severe cases get a Booster. We check the milk, and when it’s clean, she’s back in the string.”
A Smart Investment
When comparing total costs—including lost milk, labor, and treatment—AHV came out nearly identical to traditional methods: $135 vs. $134 per case. “But the turnaround time and reduced labor made the difference,” Trevor says. “It wasn’t just about ROI on paper—it was about real, daily improvements.”
Conclusion
For Trevor Nutcher and his family, AHV has delivered more than just healthier cows—it’s brought peace of mind, operational efficiency, and a new standard of care. “It’s worked quite well for us,” he says. And with results like these, it’s easy to see why.
